Moved no Date_ Approx. acreage one acre or less Setting urban context; set among similarly scaled commercial and industrial building ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) The Hibernia Block is a rather atypical expression of the early twentieth century Classical Revival style in Springfield. Like several other examples of the period, it employs a tri-partite composition with large vertical window expanses. Unlike other buildings, these expanses are divided by brick piers rather than classical columns of the giant order.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Hibernian Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. Built by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in 1910, as an assembly hall, it has housed a succession of ethnic meeting places since. As such, it stands as a key building with associations to Springfield's important ethnic groups. It meets criteria A of the National Register of Historic Places. The Ancient Order of Hibernians built this block and used the third floor as an assembly hall; the remainder was rented as rented retail space. The AOH was organized into four lodges at the time this building was completed in 1910, two of which used this hall as headquarters. The Melha Temple Shrine was located herefrom 1924 until1962.

The hall next served the Lebanese American Club, and then in 1978 the Hispanic Social Club. The Springfield chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians was organized in 1882 with approximately 100 members. Its first president was Thomas E. King and headquarters were initially located in the First National Bank Building. The Hibernians were one in a multitude of fraternal and social organizations formed in the Late 1800's . Other groups included the Free Masons, Odd FelLows, Knights of Pythias: and Grand Army of the Republic, to name a few. Formation of the Hibernian Order reflected the pattern of Irish immigrants who had settled in Springfield and sought to maintain ties among their community.
