acreage one acre or less Setting_Urban Context; primary period Landmark on north Chestnut Street (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) This building is an outstanding local example of the Chicago style of commercial architecture. The wide bays feature Chicago-style windows and pressed metal spandrel panels between stories. The original storefronts are still intact. The only semmingly incongrous element for an otherwise innovative design is the cornice, with its paired brackets of mid-19th century Italianate derivation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The McIntosh Building possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.
Constructed in 1918 by one of the region's oldest and largest boot and shoe companies, it represents the continued commercial and manufacturing growth of the downtown. style developed in Chicago. It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. This was the third building in the downtown area to be occupied by the McIntosh Shoe Co. as they continued to grow. They were contemporaneous:lyy described as "not only the oldest but the largest inland boot and shoe jobbing house in the New England states."
