Constructed in 1905, it reflects the southward commercial expansion of the downtown. Additionally, it is an exceptionally well detailed, small scale commercial block of the period which has survived nearly intact. It meets criteria A&C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Mckinney Building is a good example of commercial architecture in the early 1900's. Its Classical Revival details reflect a conscious effort to emulate the fashionable styles of the day, even in a small-scale commercial block such as this.. The five-story structure is five bays wide on Main Street, with an angled corner bay which continues the facade treatment to the Crossett Street élevation. The lower stories are treated with brick coursing, stone lintels and keystones, while the fifth story openings are round-arched with decorative voussoirs. The building is crowned by an overhanging modillioned cornice which completes the Classical ornamentation.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The block was constructed in 1905 by Richard McKinney on land formerly belonging to George Bliss and later to John Bangs, owner of the Bangs Block directly south of this parcel. The upper floors contained a meeting hall, Unity Hall, which was used by the First Spiritualist Society. Rooms for the First Spiritualist Ladies Aid Society were also located here. The ground floor was occupied as commercial space, reflecting the expanding commercial development of the downtown to areas further away from the railroad station, but close to the traditional commercial center of State and Main Streets, which also experienced many new buildings in these years. The ground floor housed McGregory and Casman Monuments in its early years.
This was most likely the successor firm to the Springfield Marble Works, which had been located on the site prior to construction of the McKinney Building. McKinney sold the building in 1909 to the Crossett Realty Trust, a partnership of Samuel D. Viets, Edward H. Norton and William G. McKechnie. S.
