ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) The Springfield Steam Power Company Block is a three story, brick industrial structure with a freestanding rectangular plan. It is significant for its associations with a major nineteeth century power company and as the home of several small scale industrial concerns. It is an ex- cellent example of a typical Springfieldilpattern; an industrial block constructed for lease to pledging companies who often went on to erect space of their own. It also exhibits important features of the Panel Brick Style which was popular for late 19th century industrial buildings. It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. During 1881 the Springfield Steam Power Co. was organized. The incorporators were the directors of the Wason Car Manufacturing Co.
and the purpose of the company vas to supply power to manufacturer occupying blocks erected by the Wason Co..litle to these blocks, located on Lyman & Taylor Streets, was transferred to the Steam Power Co., in what was reported to be the largest single real estate deal in Springfield's history. The company advertised that their power was so great, a 400 horsepower double engine with four boilers generating steam, that they . would erect other buildings as rapidly as desirable tenants demanded them. Work was begun almost immediately on this three story brick block. The first occupant was the Springfield Sewing Machine Co. Over the years, a Prominent among them were J.B. Chapman & Co. brass founders, and John Swaine Co. ironworks.
