The Stacy Building is a prominent four: story, brick industrial block: with a free standing, rectangular plan. Massive peirs rise to a patterned cornice, dividing the building into single window bays. Windows are set into segmental arched openings and contain 10/10 sash; first floor windows have five pane transoms as well HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Stacy Building possesses integrity of location, design,setting, materials and workmanship.
It is significant for its associations with local industries, and with the prominent Stacy family; it is also a good local example of the Panel Brick style, designed by a known architect. Constructed for lease in 1893, it followed the typical Springfield pattern of renting to small, and usually growing firms. It meets criteria A, B,C of the National Register of Historic Places. Edwin S. Stacy was engaged as a "manufacturer of, and dealer in machinery and mill supples"1 He established his business in Springfield in 1866. Business expanded and in 1893 he had local architect F.R. Richmond design a block for his use. Stacy's son Frank took over the business in 1911. He was president of the New England hardware Dealer's Association from 1911 to 1913 and served as mayor of Springfield from 1914 until 1918.
The upper two floors of the building were originally leased out to small manufacturing concerns. A noted occupant was J. Frank Duryea. Duryea had built and tested his first engine in the Russell shop, which was located in the block east of the Stacy building. This engine had been added to an old phaeton acquired from the Smith Carriage Co.(AreaC) Afterwards, Duryea decided to build a car "with the Machinery well concealed in the body ... built with a two cylinder, two cycle motor, my gear and clutch transmission giving three speeds and reverse, this vehicle had its first test on the top floor of the E.S. Stacy building late in 1894"2 Tests were promising and after the engine was converted to four cycles this was the car that J. Frank Duryea drove to win the Times - Herald race on Thanksgiving Day 1895 in Chicago.

He began his profession in the office of E.C. Gardner, Springfield's best known Victorian architect, and set up his practice in 1883 in collaboration with B. H. Deabury.
