Springfield South Quadrangle Ássessors' Map #309 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) Architecturally, the three story Trinity Block is an unusual example of early twentieth century commercial design. The facade is a colorful extravaganza of cast stone and terra cotta, with color used to highlight vertical and horizontal elements between major bays. The cornice is an exuberance of arches, all based on abstracted interpretations of traditional dentils, keystone and other Classical motifs.

Although its storefronts have been rebuilt, the original spacing remains as well as many of the transom details.. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Trinity Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting , materials and Norkmanship. Replacing the Trinity Church in 1923, it represents the consolidation of downtown Springfield as a commercial/industrial use area; its occupancy pattern Nas typical small scale commercial buildings in the area. It exhibits an unusually ornate design which, atypically, uses highly colored terra cotta; this design is oreserved intact with the exception of storefronts. The Trinity Block meets criteria 4 & C of the National Register of Historic Places.

The Trinity Block occupies the site of the Trinity Methodist Church which was built in 1869. The church was demolished in 1922 and a mercentile and office block was ouilt the following year at a total cost of $125,000. Samuel M Green Co., a Springfield architectural firm, designed the Trinity Block. One of the first occupants was the Dietz Bakery, which had merged in 1917 with seven other bakeries to form the Massachusetts Baking Co.. The general offices were located in this building until the company was acquired by Continential Baking Company. Other tenants inclúded a dress shop, tea room and furrier.
