The Whitcomb Warehouse is a four story, freestanding brick structure. Design elements include segmental arched windows and a patterned brick cornice. Although its setting has been rather severely compromised, this is one of the most intact industrial buildings from the late nine- teenth century. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Whitcomb Warehouse possesses integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship.

Built in 1896, it is significant for its associations with two local industries, and as an intact warehouse dating from Springfield's major period of significance. The building retains original storefronts segmental arched windows with 1/1 sash and a patterned cornice. The Whitcomb Warehouse was probably initially associated with the plant of the Springfield Cigar Manufacturing Company on Hampden Street. This was the leading cigar maker in the city. It was founded in 1883 under the name of Baer and Carruth at 535-27 Main Street and mobed to Hampden Streeet in 1885. This firm specialized in finer and medium grade cigars; its specialties were the "K of L", "Straw Tips" and "GB" grands which were sold nationally. In the early twentieth century, the building was sold to the Colby Manufacturing Co., makers of paper rulers. It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of fistoric Places.
