The Charles Atwood House is a fine local example of the Italianate style representing an early use of the L-plan with porches and entries located at the L's angle. Sited on a large well-landscaped lot, it rises two stories to intersecting gable Coofs with deeply overhanging bracketed cornices. Window treatment is varied, including single openings with heavy bracketed lintels, an arched window in the gable field and two oriels. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) Charles R.
Atwood, the original occupant, was the author of Reminiscences of Taunton in 1883, in addition to being a prominent businessman and community leader. He was the treasurer and agent for the Phoenix Manufacturing Co., and was involved in the establishment and direction of Taunton's public parks. Following Charles' death, the house passed to his son, Henry D. Atwood, cle and secretary of the Phoenix Manu- facturing Co. The house remained in the Atwood family until the 1930's. The Atwood House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship as well as significant associations with the Atwood family. Additionally, it is an important local example of the Italianate style. Thus the Atwood House meets criteria B and C of the Natioanl Register of Historic Places.
