Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Barnum School is one of three extant schools in Taunton built in the 1920's in the Georgian Revival Style. Its semi-fireproof construction, and generously proportioned classrooms were two of the many features that characterized the structure as the most modern in school deeign in an era of continuing educational reform.
The school replaces a previous one on the aite, the "Barnum St, School." which burned in 1926. Description: The square building is 2 stories and has a 3-bay facade occupied by a central projecting bay enclosing the major entrance. Other portions of the wall surface have filled-in windows, that now appear as large brick panels. The roofline is accentuated by a cornice, and brick parapet, and a central scro-led plaque with finial, bearing the school's name. The Barnum School possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria A and C of the National Registercif Historic Places standing with the Hopewell School (#240) as Taunton's best preserved examples of the 20th century, public educational architecture reflecting current population trends and ideas of education reform of the time. Boundaries contorm to current lot lines. 10.
