Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 20 Chestnut Street is a rare example in Taunton of Cothic Revival residential architecture, that may have been intluenced by Pichard Upjohn, whose local commissions include 2 churches, one residence and an academy buidling, all executed in the 1850's.
The structure is also of note for its association with Charles Jarvis Ilunt bassett, prominent Taunton attorney and President of the Taunton Bank, for whom it was built in 1851.. Descendents of Eassett lived in the house until c. 1950. Description: The 22-story frame house features an irregular plan, iccentuating its picturesque aspect, and a belcast gable roof. Gothic Eevival influence is evident in its vergeboards, incisec and punched with quatrefoil motifs, and in the pointed-arched windows that light the roof's cormers. Fenestration is varied! and incorporates segmental-arched and round-arched windows. The entrance, set into the recess formed by the facade's intersecting planes, has a segmental-arched transon and sidelights. Front and side porches are supported on chamfered posts with simple, cut brackets.
Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association, the Bassett House meets criteria A of the National Register of Historic Places as Taunton most fullnd developedexample of the Gothic Revival style in a house of its size and for its historical association with the prominent Bassett family i0.
