Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This extended gable roof cottage umi is one of the landmarks of West Taunton, reputed to be an early tavern on the "Bristol Path", (current-day Tremont St.) Structurally, the building is believed to have originally consisted of a typical, 5-bay Cape-type house, and was enlarged in c.
1800 through the addition of 3 additional bays, constituting a "half-house." Description: The l3-story, 8 bay structure features wood frame construction. It is entered through doors placed in 3rd and 6th bays that are trimmed by tapered pilasters. The older of the two entrances features a narrow transom. A drilled bedmolding articulates the cornice. Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association, Brow's Tavern meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places as a good local example of its type and periodi which retains almost all important architectural features and as the only surviving 18th century building with tavern use association.
