Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This exceptionally well-preserved house illustrates the type of comfortable residential architecture built for the middle class homeowner in Taunton in the late 19th century, as many of the city's residential neighborhoods were becoming densely settled.
The use of a combination of clapboards and shingles, gabled roof projections, and drilled brackets, are a Iew of the many details conmonly found on "Builder's Queen Anne" style houses of this period. The structure was built in c. 1888, for a George Capron. Description: The irregularly-shaped plan of this 2t-story house incorporates a gabled bay on the south elevation, a l-story projection on the north and a rear ell. The steep, hipped roof is broken on the facade by a central, shingled wall dormer. A front porch displays turned posts, spindled balustrade and pediment, over the side bay entrance, inset with a sunburst motif. Regular 2/2 windows are placed throughout the house,which along with its carriage house stands behind its original granite curbing and posts.
Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workman- ship and association, the George Carton House meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places.
