Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Lloyd Dean Iouse is the finest example in Taunton of a transitional Federal/Greek. Eevival style cottage that remains in an exceptionally good state of preservation. It is situated in a linear area along Dean Street that thema- tically represents the early agricultural settlement of the city in the l7th and 18th century. The house was built for Lloyd Dean, of the illustrious Dean Family, in c. 1825.
Successive generations, farmers and merchants, continued to occupy the structure and own surrounding land until 1889, when it was sold to Dr. J.W. Hayward. Description: rhe cottase is lt stories and has a symmetrical 5 bay facade. rhe central entrance is enframed by molded trim braced with cornerblocks, that inscribes a large leaded transom and sidelights. The structure has 6/6 sash windows and characteris- tic interior end chimneys The Lloyd Dean House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria C of the National Register of Historic Places as Taunton's finest and best preserved transitional Federal/Greel Revival style gabled cottage. Boundaries conform to present lot lines. 10.
