Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Dean louse is significant primarily for its association with the prominent Dean Family, founders of the Taunton Iron Works in c. 1657. The structure was built in 1866, on the site of a former residence, for Theodore Dean, who succeeded his father as the head of the foundry, a position he held until 1893.
Other local offices held by Dean were President of the Bristol Co. National Bank, President of the Taunton Crucible Co. and Director of the Eagle Cotton Mill. The house remained in the Dean family,. occupied by Dean's widow and sister, until the 1960's. Description: The 22-story frame Italianate house features a central gabled pavilion into which its double-leaved entrance is set, and a front porch carried on chamfered posts. The Theodore Dean House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places for its well preserved Italianate style design and for its long historical associations with one of Taunton's most prominent industrial/ commercial families.
