Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This structure is one of the four most outstanding examples in Taunton of Georgian-influenced design. Like the McKinstrey Ilouse on High Street (see Form #214), it features brick ends and a classically-detailed Georgian entrance surround.
20th century changes to the house, including a series of rear additions and Georgian Revival dormers, have done little to disturb its archi- tectural integrity and majestic site. Originally the residence and farm of Abiezar Dean, the house was constructed in c. 1798. In 1905, George Hartshorn, a descendant of Jesse and Ilarvey Hartshorn, founders of the Dean Cotton Mill (see Form #112) bought the property and added east and west wings, and dormers. In 1915, the east wing was removed and relocated on Longmeadow Foad where it was converted to a residence. Description: The 21-story structure has a symmetrical 5-bay facade, clapboarded fadade and rear elevation, and brick end elevations. Its entrance is centrally located and features a semi-circular fanlight circumscribed by a pediment, supported by tapered pilasters. Regualr fenestration features 12/12 sash windows.
The Dean-Hartshorn House possesses integrity of design, location, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria C of the Nat'1. Register of Historic Places; as well as preserved and excellent example 10.
