Historical significance. (include explanation of themes checked above) An unusually high-style structure for an industrial building, the Albert Field Tack Works was one of Taunton's most illustrious iron-related manufacturing enterprises in the 19th century.
The Italianate style main office building and its series of extensive brick ells occupies a site on the Mill River that was developed for industry in the early 18th century, when wool carding and dyeing and snuff production was undertaken by neighborhood mill owners. AlbertField, a native of Sharon, Mass., began tack produc- tion on a small scale in the 1820's in two rooms that he leased' from Roswell Ballard, owner of a mill on the site. By 1850, Field had purchased the mill, had hired additional labor and machines, and was producing an expanded line of gimp and upholstery tacks, brads and shoe nails. As a measure of the success of his business, Field had built the large brick, brownstone-trimmed office building in 1868, and began exhibiting his 2,200 varieties of nail products worldwide.
By the 1880's, the company had expanded to occupy a second factory across the street and a third in Fairhaven, Mass. Absorbed by the Atlas Tack Company in 1896, the factory continued to do well until 1902, when it went out of business, foreshadowing the waning of many other iron industries in Taunton. (cont.) 10.
