Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Fuller-Dauphin Property is the last unsubdivided estate of the late Italianate Period extant in Taunton. The house, its outbuildings and grounds survive in nearly intact condition in the midale of what is now a denselyesettled, working class neighborhood.
The house well portrays the Italianate Style's spacious proportions, disoiplined ornament and finely-crafted construction. Historically, the property is associated with a prominent figure in local law--Judge William Eddy Fuller--and on a wider scale, represents the comfort and luxury affordable by upper middle class professionals in post-Civil War New England. Designed by local architect, E.C. Chandler, the house's central hall plan reveals the openness and grand scale associated with the fully developed Italianate Style- Original specifications for its construction show the meticulous care that the architect required of all details. Chesnut, walnut, black walnut and yellow pine were used for paneling and moldings in all rooms, ornamental plasterwork cornices were installed in formal parlors, and doors throughout the house were woodgrained in chestnut and oak.
Even more utilitarian features, such as soapstone registers and walnut bathtub casings, were to be treated in a "...true, workmanlike manner." Many of these detalls stili survive on the interior, and only the addition of a sunporch to the building's eastern elevation has changed the exterior. = (cont.) 10. Judge William Eddy Fuller was well established in the Taunton community by the time he had his residence built in 1872, his wealth and social stature equal products of both his Mayflower ancestry and respected legal practice. Fuller presided as judge for 25 years over the Registry of Probate and Insolvency Court- Among his accomplishments in his field are the pioneering of new concepts in probate law, and the publishing ofia legal handbook in 1891 which was used extensively in legal education at the turn of the century.
continued to Eultertetto drnddoregabaal raraoli conothoth With the marriage of Fuller's daughter to Henry Dauphin, the house remained in the Fuller Family until Dauphin died in 1978 (June, 1979), the estate faces subdivision and possible demolition to support an elderly housing project. Description: The 2}=story structure features a classic cross-gable plan and square configuration, to which is appended a 2-story rear ell and dependency (Period) and a 20th centüry porch addition. Its entrance has double-leaved doors set in a compound molded surround. Window treatments range from 2/2 to 1/1 sash windows with pedimented hoods, to round arched gable windows. Its hipped roof is introduced by a deep box cornice with paired brackets.
