Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This structure is one of three documented houses of the Georgian and Federal periods in Taunton that exhibit true double-pile plan types and early stylistic details. Despite its overlay of asbestos shingles, the house retains two pedi- mented entrance surrounds, original roof configuration and chimneys, and 12/12 sash windows.
Historically, the house is linked to George Godfrey, a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War, who is likely to have had this residence built for him in c. 1780, or slightly before. Godfrey is known to have inhabited an earlier residence on Tremont Street. Future family generations, also prominent in local political and military affairs, continued to live in this structure in the 19th century. The General George Godfrey House possesses integrity of location, design, settting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria A,Band C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of Taunton's most finely detailed and well preserved late 18th century houses built for a locally prominent family.
