Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Ihe Ilarris Street Fridge is the oldest standing bridge in launton, and an important survivor of early public works efforts that followed the city's incorporation. Shortly aiter the installation of a citywide water system in 1876, this steel bridge was constructed over the Taunton Eiver to support a principal water main from the Farris Street Pumping Station.
Constructed by the "Pennbridge" company of Beaver Palls, Pa. in 1887, the structure is a simple Pratt, through truss bridge neasuring 100 feet long, 35' wide and 25' high. Its ample dimensions allowed it to serve secondary functions as a wälking and wagon crossing bridge . It was used in the 20th century by auto- nobiles, but after its , transierral to the Conservation Conmission in recent years, it is now used only by pedestrian traffic. The Harris Street Bridge possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It derives its sig- the Taunton Community and as a unique local century bridge design, thus meeting criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
