Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) In intact condition, this structure is the best example of Stick Style design in the city. It was built in c. 1880 and resided in by L.B. Higgins, a merchant who ran a dry goods business in Taunton's downtown commercial district. Description: Roughly square in plan, the 21-story house has a. very steep-pitched hip roof, sheathed in slates.
The facade is dominated by a bay window, and stickwork porch with drilled valence, that partially covers this face of the huilding. Stick Style features include band courses at window sill and lintel lines, and a roof frieze of short vertical boards, interspersed with deep, truss brackets. Possessing integrity of location design, setting, materials, workmanship and association, the Higgins-Hodgeman House meets criteria A & C of the National Reaister of Historic Places as a finely crafted house in the popular late 19th century architectural style and as an example of the type of high style house built by Taunton merchants during that period.
