Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Oak Street Fire Station is among the most recently constructed of Taunton's fire stations. It replaced a facility on Olney Street which was used until this bullding was built in 1915, and which was then converted to a storage house. Description: The small, rectangular station is 2 stories and terminates in a pyramidal hipped roof.
Its facade is occupied by a central engine bay and by a group of 4, 6/6 sash windows on the second story. An engaged hose tower is a prominent feature of the Oak Street facade. The Kilmer Street Fire Station possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register Of Historic Places. In general few smail neighborhood firestations were constructed in southeast Massachusetts during the Early Modern Period (1915-1940) in response to a decrease in suburban residential construction. Thus this station has some regional historical significance in addition to its local imoortance as a small (one bay) firehouse built 'at the end of Taunton's most prosperous era. Its well proportioned Queen Anne/ Colonial Revival design clearly reflects historical architecture precedents. Boundaris contorm to current lot lines. 10.
