Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This airplane hangar is the earliest standing vestige of one of New England's first private airports, "King's Field." In 1919, East Taunton dairy farmer, Henry King, converted his 50-acre farm to an airport, with the purchase of a surplus WWI trainer plane, a "Curtiss Jenny," which was housed in this structure. King and his family first began a flying school, offering flying lessons and sight-seeing tours over the Taunton area. In the 1940's and '50's, the Kings acquired a small fleet of aircraft and operated an active air taxi service between eastern seaboards cities for individuals and businesses. Local industries also hangared their own private planes, used to transport goods and materials to and from suppliers and markets, at the airfield.
In 1959, the Federal Airport Aid Program gave $213,000 for the improvement of King Field's facilities--a 3,400' paved runway, taxi strips and iadditional lighting-- and it was renamed the "Taunton Municipal Airport." A small portion of the original farm, on which the old hangar is situated, was left undeveloped. 10. The King Airplane Hangar represents an important landmark in aviation history built for what is reputedly the earliest operating commercial airfield in Massachusetts.
