Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The General Thomas Lincoln House is one of the most sophisticated examples of the Federal style extant in Taunton, displaying a particularly fine entrance surround. It is also important for its association with Thomas Lincoln (b. 1759), who had the house constructed as his residence in 1805.
A businessman and property owner, Lincoln is most often remembered for his military career, which included experience in the Revolutionary War and appointment to Brigadier General in 1809. Description: The 23-story 5 x 4-bay main block terminates in a gable roof. Its most prominent leature is the doorway, enriched by a leaded, semi-elliptical fanlight set between tapered pilasters and topped by a dentilated cap molding. 6/6 sash windows have plain wood surrounds. The roof has close-cropped eaves and a central chimney. Possessing integrity of design, location, setting,materials, workmanship and association, the General Thomas Lincoln House meets criteria B and C of the National Register.of Historic Places as a well preserved and (for Taunton) fairly sophisticatedly detailed Federal period farmhouse and as the home of prominent Taunton citizen and military figure. 10.
