Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This unusual Greek Revival struture is exceptional for its stone construction, rare in residential architecture in Taunton, and for its full Doric portico and parlor floor windows, here adapted to a small-scale "cottage." Despite the recent addition of a rear ell, the main block of the house remains in an excellent state of preservation. The house was built in 183l as the residence of Joseph L.'Lord, Postmaster of Taunton from 1829-35. Fieldstone used: inits construction is reputed by one source to have been taken from ledges surrounding the Dean Lincoln Farm, 397 Winthrop St. In 1836, Lord moved to New York and sold the property to the Hon. Francis Baylies, author, local lawyer and judge, and foreign diplomat.
Among later illustrious inhabitants is Taunton's first mayor, Edmund Hatch Bennett, who lived in the house from 1888 to 1898. In 1959, the structure was purchased by the Masonic Corporation for use as a hall, and the modern brick rear addition made subsequently. 10. Historical Significance (continued) Description: The 1½ story, central hall house of uncoursed fieldstone is circumscribed by a l-story portico consisting of fluted columns carry- ing a paneled entablature. Formal features include elongated, parlor floor windows, and a central entrance with leaded transom and sidelights. The low-pitched gable roof is broken by four, very tall paneled brick chimneys with paired caps. A rear addition to the structure, contemporary in design, was made in c. 1960 and houses Masonic Hall functions.
Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanshipand association, the Lord Baylies--Bennett House meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places as the home of a series of illustrious 19th century Taunton citizens and for its excellently preserved Greek Revival style residential cottage design executed in masonry, an unusual architectural expression in Taunton. The building's location on Winthrop Street several blocks from Taunton Green reflects initial residential development along the turnpike which was to continue throughout the 19th century.
