Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) * The Grand Army of the Republic Hall is one of the City's most significant late 19th century civic buildings, representing phases of its religious and military history, and is a fine example of Queen Anne-inspired design. Built in 1888 as the First Presbyterian Church, the structure was sited on land purchased from wealthy Taunton politician, Marcus Morton. Financial difficulties forced the church to dissolve and, in 1903, it was sold to local philanthropist, Cyrus Lothrop, who gave the building to the Veterans of the G.A.R. Throughout the 20th century, it was used as a soldiers' and sailors' memorial and housed functions commemerating the Civil War and other military events.
Despite its neglected cosmetic condition, the hall archi- tecturally exhibits well-proportioned massing,fine stone con- struction and varied Queen Anne details--most notably, a wood latticework screen, brackets and ornamented balustrade. Basically rectangular in form, the most notable feature of the building is ! its engaged stair and bell tower, lit by very narrow windows, leading to a frame balustrade edging the roof. 10. Hall possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. of the National Register of Historic Places as an outstanding example of Queen Anne architecture with a long tradition as a community gathering place, first as a church and subsequently as a Civil War Veterans' hall. Abandoned for several years, it has recently been rehabilitated for use as medical offices. The completed work has been certified as meeting the Secretary of Interior's standard (1983).
