Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This house is a beautifully sited and landscaped example of a late 19th century estate that draws its inspiration from Shingle Style houses of seaside town origin.
While the house itseli is relatively conservative in plan anc details, the property's carriage barn, with its eyebrow windows and deeply arched openings, closely approaches prototypical Shingle Style resort architecture. The estate is believed to have been constructed shortly after the sale of land from Mary Marvel to T.L. Marvel in 1882, most likely as the residence of Theodore b. Marvel. Description:The irregularly-shaped house features a hirped gable roof and varied wall surface of fieldstone and shingles. Anong its most dominant elements are its boldly-arched fieldstone porch, varied fenestration, and connected Shingle Style barn, with sweeping roof, eyebrow windows and large arched entrance, constructed of fieldstone. The Marvel House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.
It meets' with criteria C of the National Register of Historic Places as Taunton's most intact example of a large Shingle Sytle house and complementing carriage barn.
