Sited prominently at the intersection of Tremont and Shores Streets, this Italianate side hall house is the best- preserved and detailed of a row of free-standing single family houses of mid-century construction lining the south side of Tremont St.. Retaining all period features and trim, it is among the best examples of this house type and period of design in the city. Probably built in c.
1865, as its design suggests, the house was the residence of N.S. Mason, likely its original owner, in the 1870's and early 1880's. Description; Featuring a side hall plan, the 23-story house is entered through a side bay entrance with double-leaved door, side- lights and molded surround. Windows vary from formal parlor floor windows with transoms, to second story windows with cap moldings, to round arched windows set in keystoned surrounds in the gable. The facade and side elevations are shielded by a porch mounted on caderand sih square posts, with brackets, ending in a polygonal corner projection with polygonal roof. The roofline is defined by fascia, brackets and eaves returns. 10.

Mason House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets Critérion C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of a small number of intact sidehall plan Italianate style houses in Taunton; it is most notable for ornate detailing of its porch, cornice and window sourrounds which enliven a typical sidehall plan building of the period.
