Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This house is one of the most exuberant examples of the Queen Anne style in Taunton, exhibiting ludor details, and remains in excellent condition. Sited on one of a network of quiet, residential streets north of the town center, it iluustrates the gradual subdivision of large landed estates by speculators in this section of the city in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The land on which the house is sited was originally part of Lovett Morse's large estate, the house of which (original Tisdale Mansion) remains at 17 Fayette Place. Dissolved after Morse's death in 1880, the estate was parceled, and a lot given to his son, Henry Morse, who had the present structure built as his residence in 1882. Description: Nearly identical in plan to #289 W. Brittania St (See Form # 465), the 21-story house is basically rectangular in plan, with central and side elevation bay projections. It has a pyramidal hipped roof with no deck. A central bay pavilion has applied, Tudor-derived trusswork, and triple, small-paned windows. 1 front porch , also with half timbering on its pedimnet, is supported on turned posts. Windows are 2/2 and 1/1, and are grouped in 4's in the house's bay projections. 10.
