Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Despite its contemporary brick and Irame additions, the Dean Street Depot is a relatively intact example of yet another Taunton building designed in the Italianate style. Its major significance, however, lies in the fact that it is the only standing railroad depot in the city.
Serviced in the late 19th century by several railroad lines, Taunton had depots in tle Central area, Whittenton, East Taunton and Myricksville. The depot was constructed in 1876 by the Old Colony Railroad, when it ran an extension branch through Taunton, largely due to the influence of Samuel Crocker, president of the Old Colony Iron Company in East Taunton, who lobbied for the railroad line's v placement alongside his company's complex (see Area Forn AZ - NR9) Description: The 11-story Italianate structure features a cross- gabled roof and brick walls laid in a common bond pattern. Entrances, on the end bays of all major elevations, have large, 5-paned transoms and granite lintels, Elongated windows are topped by granite lintels carried on feet. A wide, projecting overhang, on deep truss brackets, continues around the building, shielding its first story and platform area.
The roof is accentuated by a cornice laid with console brackets and introduced by corbeled brickwork. Staggered granite quoins ornament the corners of the structure. 10. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places as a good local example of Italianate commercial architecture which stands as Taunton's most visible remaining link to the era when rail lines helped foster the city's properous industrial and commercial development.
