Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This well-preserved Mansard house is one of the most ornate examples of the style in Taunton and was the residence of an important figure in Weir Village's industrial and commer- cial life in the 19th century. Together with his brother, Alfred,Paull owned a significant amount of property in the Weir, much of which was sold specu- latively for residential construction.
In addition to other commercial ventures, James Paull was a wheelwright and operated a carriáge making business. Description: The 2-story house is roughly square in plan, with a rear ell and is sheltered by an unusually high belcast Mansard roof. Its porch, covering the facade and a portion of the side elevation, is carried on chamfered posts that meet curvilinear pendant brackets at the valence line. Windows are both 2/2 and triple-hung, parlor floor length. The roof has a deep soffited cornice with paired pendant brackets, and is broken in the central bay by a sloping-sided dormer, ornamented with a solid, paneled vergeboard that is decoratively painted. Smaller dormers occupy the roof sother slopes. The Alfred Paull House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.
It meets criteria A an C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of Taunton's best surviving Second Emoire Style houses, here with eleborate 10.
