Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Designed by famed New York architect, Richard Upjohn, the Pilgrin Congregational Church is the second oldest church in central Taunton.
Its establishment resulted fron a division in the congregation of the First Parish Church (on Church Green), and its first structure, the Irinitarian Congregational Church, was built in 1823 on orchard land north of the present church site. In 1852, this frame church was moved to the site of the current Jones Block on Broadway, where it was remodeled into the "Jones Atheneum." The present stone church was built in 1852. A small chapel in the rear, used for Sunday School classes, was added in 1915. Description: The bold, geometric form of the church is derived Irom its broad gabled facade, arranged around an engaged, central tower, and from its robust fieldstone construction. The solidity of the wall surface is accentuated by the structure's few, narrow lancet windows, which give way, on side elevations, to large, round-arched stained glass windows.
The entrance, set into the tower, is recessed into a simple archway. Cornices of both the church and its tower are ornamented with large, mutule-like projections. 10.
