Williams, from the designs of architect, Gustavus L.
Smith, it has subdued, but clear, Georgian Eevival details and a simple plan--characteristics of many late 19th and early 20th century schools in the Northeast. As the North Central area of Taunton attracted a large population of Potuguese immigrants in the early 1900's, School Street School's enrollment was dominated by Portuguese children, and was the only school in the city to offer courses in the native language. Description: Of 2 stories and a simple, rectangular plan, the school features Georgian Levival details that include corner quoins and Palladian-type windows. The building retains one of its trooriainadettrsaceporebesedbrfriezed ports ees the in Corinthian capitals. structure's slate-sheathed hipped roof with deck. The School Street School possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.
It meets criteria A C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of Taunton's best preserved schools built during an era of educatiónal reform at tne end of the 19th century and 10.
