Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This remarkably well-preserved Mansard cottage is exceptional for its intact period details, and for its "Pic- turesque" site, which features a landscaped circular footpath ironting the house. The structure was built between the years 1871 and 1879, and was deeded to A. White by the City of Taunton in 1879.
The house was sold in 1880 to Albert Sweet, whose name is associated with it until 1908; it is probable that he is the building's original resident. Description: The small-scaled cottage is one story and features. a Mansard roof and an engaged corner tower with gable roof. Its facade features a porch with openwork posts and valence in wood. Irregularly placed windows have 1/1 and 2/2 sash; paired, round-arched 1/1 windows are placed in the gable of the tower. The roof, covered in wood shingles is lit by gabled dormers with round-arched windows. The Albert Sweet House possesses integrity of location, de- sign, setting; materials, workmanship and association.
'It meets criterion of the National Register of Historic Places as Taunton's most eleborate Second Empire style cottage which mot only displays a degree of ornamuntmore commonly found on larger houses but which also retains elements of original landscaping. 10.
