Constructed of Indiana limestone in 1903, the library was gener- ously endowed with an Androw Carnegle grant of $70,000.
As well as housing the Library's collection, it served as a comnunity cultural center by offering lecture series, special events, and performances for Taunton residents. Description: The structure adheres to a T-shaped plan, formed by a large, projecting central bay that incorporates a round-arched opening, into which is set a formal entrance with eared surround, broken pediment and cartouche. The facade is further articulated by engaged, Scamozzi columns and pilasters, dividing the central pavilion into bays. These support a complex entablature. Fenes- tration throughout the building varies, using rectangular, and round-arched windows with a variety of molded surrounds. A new (1979) addition to the library is appended to the rear. 10.
