Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Like all of Taunton's Queen Anne Period architecture, this house displays a conservative plan type, but features unusually ornate and varied ornament derived from Eastlake and Tudor designs.
These elements include a wall surface enlivened with clapboards, cut shingles and wainscoting, pedimented gables applied with curved truss bracket motifs, porch with drilled and spindled screens, and elaborate wrought iron cresting. The house is informal, yet is among the most Picturesque of the City's Victorian Era construction, and is equally excep- tional for its virtually intact condition. It is likely that the house was built in c. 1887 for an HP. Thomas, whose descendants inhabited it in the 20th century. Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association, the H. P. Thomas House meets criteria C of the National Register of Historic-Places.
