Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This stately Greek Revival House, with full period portico, is one of the very last standing examples of early 19th century estate architecture in Taunton. Built for Samuel Trescott Tisdale in 1835, it was originally part of an extensive landed estate that stretched west to School St., south to Main St., and east to Cedar St.
In the 1850's, Lovett Morse, President of the Taunton National Bank, bought the property and held it, unsubdivided, until the 1870's when he died. Subsequently, land was sold off in parcels as residential development pressure in the surrounding neighbor- hood increased. Description: The house features a simple, 21-story, central hall plan, and is set on a high brick foundation. A commodious, 1- story portico with full-length fluted columns wraps around 3 faces of the structure. The central entrance has a leaded transom and sidelights, recessed into a boldly molded surround with corner- blocks. 6/6 sash windows appear throughout.
Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association, the Tisdale Mansion/Morse Estate meets criteria B & C of the National Register of Historic Places for its association with an early president-of the first bank thought (cont.) 10.
