Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This is an almost intact Stick Style church, exhibiting Queen Anne Style details, sited at a pivotal intersection in 19th century residential neighborhood near Whittenton Mills.
The land on which the building is sited was owned by the Whittenton Manufacturing Co. and was donated by Charles Lovering for the construction of a Protestant chureh in 1872 at a cost of $20,000. Prior to its construction, the con- gregation met in whet is now the "Mill Store" building at Whittenton Mills. Description: The I-shaped church is composed of two intersecting gabled portions, and an engaged entrance and belltower, ending in a tall spire. The main entrence is shielded by a smallihood, mounted on truss brackets. Windows vary from paired and grouped elongated windows with tiny leaded panes, to small, square windows in the tower. The tower has large, louvered Gothic arches in its belfry ornamented with quatrefoil and drilled decorations, the spire itself has helm-like cuts at the corners and is sheathed in wood shingles.
Union Congregational Church possesses integrity of location, design, setting,materials, workmanship and association. It is an ecclesiastical property deriving primary significance for its archi- tectural distinction and its historical associations with the development of the Whittenton Mills area.
