Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Legion Hall is an important architectural component of Taunton's central commercial district and one of the very few examples of stone construction in the City.
Built in 1867, the structure was financed by local philanthropist, Joseph Dean, as the"Union Mission Chapel", a place of worship for those Taunton parishioners who could not afford pews in the First Congregational Church. . In 1881, the building was adopted by the "'Association of Charities", to aid the local poor: Subsequent uses were its conversion to "Historical Hall", the artifact repositor and meeting hall of the Old Colony Historical Society (1886-1926) and its sale to the American Legion (1926-present). Description: The Gothic Revival hall is rectangular in plan, and is oriented with the gable end facing the street. Of coursed Iieldstone construction, it features bold Gothic Revival details: an entrance set in a limestone-trimmed surround under a peaked hood mold, and elongated stilted arched windows with peaked stone lintels. Staggered corner quoins ornamnet the building's edges.
