Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Vickery-Daylies house supplies a now-rare example of the simply designed, but large-scale residences built during the Greek Pevival period for Taunton's rising industrialist and merchant classes. It and the Tisdale-Morse Estate on Fayette Street (see Form #144) are the only standing vestiges of central hall Greck levival architecture in the central area.
Duilt in 1830 for either John Williams or Charles Richmond, early mill operator, the house was in the possession of Charles Vickery by 1842. Vickery, the son of sea captain and merchant, David Vickery, was a textile manufacturer, banker and postmaster. The house remained in the Vickery family intil 1899, and then passed to Nathaniel Fish, Mayor of Taunton from 1897-1899. Description: The central hall house of 2-stories, has its gable end facing the street and a dominant, 1-story portico, carried or Iluted columns, wraps around facade and side elevation. The covi- line is given emphasis by large eaves returns and 1 in1i chimneys. The Vickery-Baylies House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.
It meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places for its Historical associations with Taunton citizens of note in the fields of industry and politics during the 19th century and architecturally, as a rare surviving example of its type and period in the community. 10.
