Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 33 Plain Street is of merit for its representation of a very rare brick,gambrel-roofed cottage, and for its association with one of Weir Village's early sea captains, Captain David Vickery.
Vickery, who commanded the deep water schooner, the "Iannah, " was one of the many merchants and traders that did business on eastern seaboard coastal towns and in the lest Indies in the early 19th century. It is likely that Vickery had this house constructed for himself and his wife, Priscilla Barnum. In 1800, they had a son, Charles, who as an adult was an illustrious local politician, merchant and auctioneer. In 1830, Charles Rice Vickery moved into a house at 56 Summer Street (Form #79), where he lived until 1883. The Captain David Vickery House Bossesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places for its link with Taunton's early maritime tradition and as the City's sole surviving brick gambrel roof cottage of the Federal period.
