The similarity in doorway treatment between this house and that of 101 Sonerset Ave.

may suggest a common carpenter, Abel Burt, who is credited with the construction of the latter structure. The house was built in c. 1860 for Salmon Washburn, who ran a furniture, housewares and hardware business on Main Street. Washburn began his business career selling paints and oils for his father in the 1820's and went into business for himself in 1840. After Washburn's retirement, his sons, Frank and Charles, carried on the fanily business throughout the 19th century. Like the neighboring Samuel Colby Estate, at 74 Winthrop St., also built for a prosperous local businessman, this house is typical of the quality and opulence of domestic construction affordable by the upper middle class in Taunton's most econo- mically stable period. 10. Historical Significance (continued) Description: Ehibiting a square plan, the structure is 2 stories and has a verylow-pitched hipped roof that appears flat from eye level. Its wall surface of stone blocks is stuccoed and scored*. Dominating the facade is a bold, semi-circular-arched doorway inset with an elaborate cast-iron screen, cast in foliate pattern, in the transom area. 6/6 win- dows are elongated and topped by hoods supported on ancons. A very broad, box cornice and projecting eaves shields a frieze with attic windows on the side elevations.
