Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Washington School is the fifth oldest masonry school still standing in Taunton. It was constructed during the City's extensive building program of area schools and public buildings in the 1880-1930 period.

Named for George Washington, it was built as a primary school in 1897 to relieve overcrowded con- ditions in other centrally located schools, most notably, Cohannet St., Pine St. and Winthrop St. schools. Description: The 2 story building with semi-exposed basement is organized in a I-shaped configuration, formed by its long main block and intersecting, projecting central pavilion. The structure's most outstanding feature is its entrance tower, housing round-arched entrance opening and ending in an open belfry belcast pyramidal roof. with Italianate influence is noted.in the structures series of elongated, round-arched windows, while the large, semi-circular fanlight over the main entrance suggests Georgian Revival design. The hipped roof features a deck, and has a projecting cornice with brackets.

The Washimgton School possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It meets criteriaA and C of the National Register of Historic Places as a locally distinguished example of eclectic late 19th century institutional architecture, one of three schools (see #141 and 473) designed by an area architect and cons. structed in response to Taunotn's bergeoning population growth at the 10.
