Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Weir Engine House is one of three fire stations built in Taunton in the 1880's that exhibit Queen Anne style details, and remain in a good state of preservation. Designed by architect and fire chief, Abner Coleman, the structure is closely modeled after the Whittenton Fire Station, also designed by Coleman in the same year.
Description: The building is composed of 22-story brick main block and a rear ell that houses police station functions, both of which are capped by hipped roofs. The main block's three engine bays are trimmed by rock-faced granite lintels that conform to tle segmentalparched openings. A group of 3, 2/2 sash windows, occupying the second story central bay, are con- tiguous with a corresponding set of truncated windows that visually suppe gabled wall dormer, inset with cut shingles, directly above. A hose-dayingtower,with woodbalustrade, is connected tothe structure at the rear. The Weir Ingine House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.
It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of two notable Queen Anne style influenced firehouses (see #405) designed by Taunton's fire chief, Abner Coleman and built to serve dense residential/ commercial neighborhoods during a period of concerted mumicipal 10.
