Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Westville Church is the central structure of Westville, occupying a prominent site at the crossroads of Winthrop St. and North and South Walker Streets. The West Congregational Society, composed of dissenters from the First Parish Church in Central Taunton, built a meeting house in Oakland, at the corner of Glebe and Oakland Streets, in 1792.
This church was dismantled in 1824, however, and reconstructed on its present site, purchased from mill operator, John West, for $100, in the same year. It is presently the oldest standing church in the City. Description: Built in the Federal Period, this church typifies New England Meeting house design in its gabled entrance projection, simple window treatment, and door surround consisting of pilasters supporting a cap-modded entablature. The structure features a one-tiered tower that forms a base for its polygonal cupola/belfry. 10.
