Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 242 Winthrop St. is one of the largest and most elaborate examples of the Mansard style in the city. Among its period features are a belcast Mansard roof retaining patterned slates, and an ornate Palladian-type window with stained glass panes on its southern elevation. Built for William I. White in 1873, the house passed to his son, William L.
White, Jr. in 1875. For years, the structure was a local landmark in "White's Four Corners," the intersection of Winthrop and Highland Streets, so named for its other residences belonging to the White family. Prominent in the Taunton business community, White ran a carriage manufac- tory (Peck & White) at 21-29 Weir St. in the late 19th century. Description: The asymmetrically-arranged house is 2 stories and has a Mansard roof. A dominant feature is its porch, extending over the facade and a part of both side elevations, that is carried on grouped Tuscan columns mounted on a stone block foundation, that is broken at regular intervals by a spindled balustrade. The patterned slate roof is lit by dormers with scrolled jambs and segmental pediments, and is introduced by a dentilated and bracketed cornice.
