Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This structure is a fine example of a cross-gabled Italianate Style house which retains all period trim and details, including an elaborate bracketed porch. It is among the five best examples of the Italianate Style extant in Taunton. Between the years 1854 and 1858, N.S.
Williams, a land- owner and rural mills operator at "King's Furnace'; a pond-side industrial development northeast of this site, moved from Lakeville to Taunton. It is surmised that he built this structure as his residence during this period, eventhough there are no recorded property transactions in the area at the time. Description: The 23-story house, with rear ells, features a central gable, raising the facade wall into a pavilion. A 1-story porch, covering 2 elevations, is supported on chamfered posts and ornamnented with pendant brackets. Fenestration includes 2/2 windows with cap=molded lintelboards, and paired, round-arched gable windows. A large bulls-eye window occupies the central gable of the facade. Possessing integrity of location, design, setting, 'materials, workmanship and association, the N.S.
Williams House meets criteria C of the National Register of Historic Places as one of a small number of well-preserved, carefully detailed Italianate houses remaining.
