Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Winslow Congregational Church is among the most impressive of Taunton's 19th century churches, exhibiting sand- stone construction and bold Gothic detailing. Historically, it represents the growth in numbers of Taunton's largest religious group, the Congregationalists. By the 1830's, the need for additional church space was recognized.
42 members of the Broadway Church and 2 from the Westville Congregational Church formed a new congregation which held services in the now-defunct "Spring Street Church." In 1853, a new meeting house was constructed on Cohannet Street, and was 'formally named the "Winslow Congregational Church," in honor of Governor Edward Winslow. Continued increase in membership in post-Civil War years moved the Congregationalists to raise funds for yet another church, and in 1897, the present structure was built, and dedi- cated in the following year. EL762 Description: The monwmentally-scaled, 2 level church has an frregular roughly a central position on the facade, is set in a compound pointed arch, topped by a stained glass and wood tympanum panel. Historical Significance (continued) Description: The irregular fenestration is composed mainly of elongated paired windows of fixed sash with transoms and of full length stained glass windows set in hood molds. Windows, coping, and parapets throughout the building are trimmed in brownstone, which provides dramatic contrast to the uncoursed sandstone walls.
Winslow Congregational Church now known as the Church of All Nations possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It is an ecclesiastical property deriving primary sig- nificance for its architectural distinction and secondarily, derives historical importance as it represents the growth of Taunton's largest religious group --The Congregationalists.
