The six gable-roofed dormers are an original feature of owner Stephen Barker's design. A fluted Doric column- porch is carried around three sides of the steep-gable roof; the sidehall entry is surrounded by glazed sidelights and transom.
In addition to the 1839 house, the property includes a carriage house/garage which reportedly contains structural members from a 1737 barn. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) 165 Haverhil1 Street possesses integrity of location, design, setting,matertat, and work- manship, and meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. significant as a well conserved "country residence", one of several handsome houses built at the periphery of the Methuen settlement in the mid 19th century. Reportedly, surveyor Stephen Barker built "Woodland Cottage" in imitation of antebellum mansions he had seen in the South.
