The Captain Oliver Emerson House is a well preserved 2½-story farmhouse dating from ca.1775. The five-bay facade with central entry is clapboard-clad, the building rests on a granite rubble foundation. 6/6 double-hung sash is intact at the second story; 9/9 sash in the first story windows may be restorations. The entry door dates from ca.1860 and has double-round arched lights. The central chimney mass is intact and contributes to the 18th century appearance of the building.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Emerson House is significant as a well preserved dwelling along one of Methuen's early roads. The buiding is associated with Oliver Emerson, a locally prominent Revolutionary War Captain. The building is association with Methuen's early development (pre-1850) when most of the town's population was dispersed along its network of country roads.
