The 2½-story shingle-clad Queen Anne house with corner turret rests on a fieldstone foundation; upper sash windows are six-paned.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) 283 Broadway possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It represents the "standard" Shingle Style version of merchants' and businessmen's houses built by Methuen and Lawrence carpenters at the turn of the century. This one is of particular importance because of its location in the town center. G. B. Emmons, the first owner, was president of Emmons Loom Harness Company in Lawrence. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher) Methuen Pictorial Souvenir, 1903.
